Cora Morales woke on Valentine’s morning feeling lighter than she had in months — cheerful, hopeful, and excited to surprise her husband Eric with a special night. She had spent the day carefully preparing a candlelit dinner, her favorite red dress he’d given her years ago, and a gift she knew he’d love.
Cora and Eric’s love story began at a business conference in Texas, where they bonded over shared childhood experiences as orphans raised in foster care. They married soon after, determined to build a happy family together, and were blessed with triplets not long after.
But life had worn them both down. Eric worked long hours trying to support their family of five, barely taking a break, and their finances were always tight. Cora understood, never spending without purpose, saving every penny she could.
So that Valentine’s Day, she hoped her surprise dinner — complete with heart-shaped red velvet cheesecake and her lovingly wrapped gift — would remind him of their love despite the hard times. She lit candles, placed rose petals, and waited.
When Eric came home, he walked into the candlelit room and didn’t see sweetness — he saw “stupid teenagers’ crap.” He snapped, turning on the lights and launching into a tirade about how hard he worked while she wasted money and time.
When she offered him the gift, Eric didn’t appreciate the gesture — he flung it to the floor and mocked her effort. Then he insulted her ability as a mother and housewife, blaming her for dirty dishes and crying triplets. Hurt and angry, Cora snapped back before storming out to get diapers, because they had run out.
Eric groaned through the quiet house for almost an hour before the doorbell rang again. He answered — and found a police officer standing on the porch. The officer delivered news no one ever expects: Cora had died in a car accident. Her body had been identified earlier that day.
Eric was frozen in shock. He called a neighbor to look after the triplets and went to the mortuary himself. Seeing Cora’s lifeless body broke him in ways he’d never known.
Back home, the dinner table still stood as it was — candles, desserts, and the gift box still on the floor. For the first time, his memories of the evening rushed back. He remembered the gift… and realized he never opened it.
With trembling hands, Eric unwrapped the box. Inside were two plane tickets to Hawaii — and a note from Cora. In it, she revealed she had just been hired at a new job and arranged for their neighbor to watch the babies so she could start working. The tickets were her surprise: a vacation for the two of them, a break they had long needed.
Reading her words, Eric broke down and sobbed like a child. But there was no bringing Cora back — just memories and regret.
From that day on, Eric’s life was never the same. He never fell in love again. Instead, he dedicated himself to their children — providing for them, nurturing them, and each Valentine’s Day visiting Cora’s grave, talking to her as if she were still there.
Lessons from their story:
-
Don’t jump to conclusions about someone’s intentions.
-
Anger and stress can make you blind to love right in front of you.
